Recent ActivityStudents in Kindergarten through 6th grade are music students at Old Fort Elementary.
Students are in music class one to two times a week, depending on their individual class's schedule.
By the time our students leave the sixth grade they will have learned about and developed skills in the following areas:
- Basic singing skills-including some two-part harmony
-Music reading and music vocabulary
- Music history and its relation to our culture and other cultures
-Instrument playing skills using:
various percussion instruments, the Appalachian dulcimer, the Autoharp, the Ukulele, and the Baroque recorder.
-Skills in simple improvising and composing
-Students will also learn how music touches every academic subject that they study in elementary school.
Above all, I hope they will take with them a love of making music!

Class Announcements Happy New Year!It has been awhile since I have updated, my apologies!
4th and 5th grades did a fantastic job with their performance Veterans Day performance in November. The Talent Show and 1st Grade PTO is coming up on Thursday, January 26th. All Arrowhead Sound forms are due AT THE LATEST by Friday, January 27th. Arrowhead Sound begins on Wednesday, February 1st at 2:45. 2nd Grade PTO will be Tuesday, March 20th and the Arrowhead Sound Concert will be Thursday, March 22nd. Kindergarten will perform on Thursday, May 5th. 5th and 6th graders need to continue to bring their recorders to class. I hope everyone has a wonderful semester!  Keyboards!!!!!Thanks to a grant from Ronald McDonald House Charities, Old Fort Elementary has a keyboard lab! Students in K-6 began learning basic skills between April and June last school year. We will be studying keyboards again in April 2012. It is a wonderful tool for reviewing music reading skills. This has been a terrific addition to the music program here at OFE.
We use a computer resource called MIDISaurus that is just excellent (available on most music education store websites such as Music in Motion, West Music and others...just do a search). We also use a website that can be found here: http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks2/music/piano/ This is a Virtual Keyboard site. I have not found any problems with it, if you find any, please let me know!  Upcoming EventsThird grade classes performed their PTO program on September 29th and were the opening act for OctoberFest on September 30th. They performed two traditional rounds and showed off their new dulcimer-playing skills. They did a great job!
Other upcoming events: 4th and 5th grade perform their Veterans Day program on Tuesday, November 8th, 2012 at 6:30 PM. 1st Grade PTO and the Talent Show will be Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 6:30PM. 2nd Grade PTO will be Tuesday, March 20, 2012. National Music Education Standards and Old Fort ElementaryEvery class at Old Fort Elementary is taught in compliance with the NC and National Music Education Standards. Please check the National Standards in the Class Web pages section below. Music at Old Fort Elementary is very much an academic class. Each lesson covers a MINIMUM of two standards. Even when the children think they are just having fun (which I hope most of them are) they are still learning skills/knowledge from two or more standards. Even the singing games we play in class cover 4 standards at once! For a specific example that is used in several grades (using the "Star-Spangled Banner" as a basis), please check the NC and National Music Education Standards web page below.
